Welcome to Atlanta’s Premier Afrocentric Cultural Center
Omenala Griot Afrocentric Museum & Event Center is a place where African and African American heritage is honored, celebrated, and lived. Founded in 1992, our mission is to rectify, reclaim, and restore the presence of Black excellence in history by offering a powerful, immersive cultural experience. Located in Atlanta’s historic West End, we are more than a museum — we are a community space, a storytelling hub, and a venue for celebration.
This is not a place to passively observe. It is a space where visitors see, hear, touch, and engage with culture, gaining a deeper understanding of the African diaspora through hands-on exhibits, historical murals, and community-led interpretation. Here, culture isn’t contained behind glass — it’s alive in every room, every voice, every artifact, and every event.
Our Mission and Approach
Our goal is to challenge what history has omitted by creating an environment where Black stories are front and center. Too often, the contributions of African and African American people are overlooked in mainstream institutions. At Omenala Griot, we flip that narrative by placing our heritage at the core of everything we do.
We serve families, schools, churches, cultural organizations, and community members with a hands-on, highly engaging format. Our curated tours lead guests through African origins, transatlantic slavery, the Civil Rights Movement, and modern Black innovation. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussion, and share their own stories. The experience is both educational and deeply personal.
Events and Private Rentals
In addition to museum tours, we provide a unique and culturally rich setting for private events. Our indoor and outdoor spaces are available for:
-
Weddings and receptions

The venue features a full kitchen, restroom facilities, open seating areas, outdoor mural gardens, and flexible layouts. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or organizing a community event, our team ensures that every detail is culturally respectful and beautifully executed.
We understand the importance of tradition, family, and community. That’s why we offer more than space — we offer meaning, purpose, and intentional support.
A Hands-On Museum Experience
What makes us different is how we teach history. Our exhibits are designed for full sensory involvement. Children and adults alike are invited to touch artifacts, speak affirmations, listen to oral histories, and connect personally with the stories told throughout our galleries.
The garden area, lined with Afrocentric murals and sculpture, serves as both an outdoor classroom and reflective space. Inside, each room focuses on a different chapter in the African American journey — from pre-colonial African societies to present-day cultural movements.
Docents lead group tours with storytelling, call-and-response engagement, and opportunities for guests to interact directly with historical themes. For school groups, we align content with educational standards while emphasizing identity, resilience, and pride.

Weekly Community Wellness
Every Tuesday, we host community Pilates classes in our venue. These sessions offer more than physical exercise — they provide healing, grounding, and a sense of shared purpose. Led by trained instructors, the classes are open to all skill levels and offer a peaceful space to recharge in body and spirit.
This weekly practice reflects our belief that culture includes wellness. Movement, breath, and shared space are essential elements in sustaining both personal and collective health.
